Our Family’s Triumph at the International Karate Association World Cup

In a display of skill, strength, and spirit, our family has left a mark at the largest martial arts tournament ever held in the Southern Hemisphere—the International Karate Association World Cup.

Among the champions is Paul, my husband, who defied age to compete against opponents two decades his junior. With grit and determination, he secured victory against a formidable opponent from New Zealand. In a nail-biting finale, Paul just narrowly missed out on the top podium spot by a single point, but his performance against a fellow Australian was nothing short of inspirational.

Sophie, showcased her prowess by achieving equal third place in an exceedingly competitive kata division. She also placed in the top 15 in the world for Traditional Weapons!

Andy, not to be outdone, displayed exceptional talent by clinching 3rd place in Kata and an impressive 5th in traditional weapons, demonstrating a versatile skill set that is the hallmark of a true martial artist.

And then there’s me. I achieved an extraordinary feat: first place in Kata and second in traditional weapons. This double achievement has earned me the title of World Champion in Kata and runner-up World Champion in Traditional Weapons. It’s a dream turned into reality!

Our family journey to the World Cup has been nothing short of a rollercoaster, with the event initially slated for 2020 but postponed due to the pandemic. The wait only intensified our resolve, and when the competition finally commenced in Australia, we were ready.

The World Cup itself was a convergence of talent, with Sydney playing host to a diverse array of martial artists from across the globe. Teams were competing at the event from over 15 different Nations. The event was not just a competition but a celebration of martial arts, where different cultures and styles came together under the shared language of karate.

The emotional core of this journey is one of shock and elation as years of dreaming about a World Championship belt materialized before my eyes. For me and my family, it wasn’t just about the titles and the accolades; it was the joy of coming together, pushing our limits, and achieving something that once seemed almost unreachable.

As we stand proud, our family of champions reminds us all of the enduring power of dreams, the beauty of martial arts, and the incredible things that can happen when determination meets opportunity on the world stage.
